Music Moves You.
Many people as children took lessons on some kind of musical instrument. This may or may not have been compulsory. After reaching adulthood kids often look back on so many of the opportunities they had as children and wish they had done something more with them. This is particularly true of music lessons. Leading many adults to seek out lessons in the instruments they abandon as children. Contrary to popular belief it is never too late to learn. While learning as a child may be easier, learning as an adult has advantages too. As an adult learner an individual can be aware he or she is making a conscious choice to learn and not being made to learn.
Music has an amazing way of speaking to people on a different level, a more authentic level which is why music therapy is so successful. An off-shoot of this is learning to play or sing and using it as a form of self-expression. Researchers hypothesize that it is because of this emotional connection to music that individuals who play an instrument or sing often report better moods.
Music classes have the reputation of being very expensive, but they need not be prohibitively expensive. There are many options to make them affordable. Instead of buying a new instrument consider renting one or buying used, a lot of music stores either have used instruments for sale or can point you in the right direction. Consider hiring a college student to teach, especially if you have basic knowledge from childhood. When choosing an instrument be aware that you will need to practice it, so make sure you have it available to do so at home. Point being, don’t choose to take piano if there is not a piano available to practice on.
If the above suggestions are still too expensive, consider joining a choir at a church or civic group. Often that is free and it provides a social outlet as well as musical education. Singing in public is one of the most common fears to have, so a chorus or choir may give a person who is apprehensive enough confidence to try it.
Music lessons are more than learning to play Mary Had a Little Lamb. Music lessons can teach individuals to honor and express feelings in a positive way. Skills learned in music lessons transfer over to different subjects readily, allowing children to learn easier and excel at a wide variety of academic areas. Music lessons can help carry on traditions in cultures. Music can aide in recovery from illness, injury, or strokes. The Journal of Music therapy has also stated that music classes help reduce Alzheimer’s patients distress and improve their ability to focus, and improved social interaction. The benefits to music education seem limitless. With very few drawbacks.
